چکیده

Drainage networks on terrains have been studied extensively from an algorithmic perspective. However, in drainage networks water flow cannot bifurcate and hence they do not model braided rivers (multiple channels which split and join, separated by sediment bars). We initiate the algorithmic study of braided rivers by employing the descending quasi Morse-Smale complex on the river bed (a polyhedral terrain), and extending it with a certain ordering of bars from the one river bank to the other. This allows us to compute a graph that models a representative channel network, consisting of lowest paths. To ensure that channels in this network are sufficiently different we define a sand function that represents the volume of sediment separating them. We show that in general the problem of computing a maximum network of non-crossing channels which are δ-different from each other (as measured by the sand function) is NP-hard. However, using our ordering between the river banks, we can compute a maximum δ-different network that respects this order in polynomial time. We implemented our approach and applied it to simulated and real-world braided rivers. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Analysis of Algorithms and Problem Complexity

Braided Rivers and Superconducting Vortex Avalanches

Magnetic vortices intermittently flow through preferred channels when they are forced in or out of a superconductor. We study this behavior using a cellular model, and find that the vortex flow can make braided rivers strikingly similar to aerial photographs of braided fluvial rivers, such as the Brahmaputra. By developing an analysis technique suitable for characterizing a selfaffine (multi)fr...

بررسی الگوهای رودخانه‌ای مئاندری، شریانی و آنابرنچینگ با استفاده از شاخص های شریانی و خمیدگی در رودخانه گاماسیاب

Rivers have different patterns of plan forms. Straight and meandering rivers have single channel but braided, anabranching and anastomosing rivers have multi channels. Gamasiab River in Kermanshah province has different plan forms of channels. In this study, historical method is used and is investigated different plan form and river's changes with using of aerial photography of 1955, 1969, 2003...

Estimation of discharge from three braided rivers using synthetic aperture radar satellite imagery: Potential application to ungaged basins

Analysis of 41 ERS 1 synthetic aperture radar images and simultaneous ground measurements of discharge for three large braided rivers indicates that the area of active flow on braided river floodplains is primarily a function of discharge. A power law correlation is found between satellite-derived effective width We and discharge Q, where We is the water surface area within a braided reach divi...

DTM and interpolations in GRASS: application to a braided river

The present work deals with the problems related to the generation of Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of braided rivers by means of the open source GIS GRASS. In particular, we investigated how to optimize the terrain survey, that is how to reduce the density of topographic points that we have to survey and which is their best distribution, related to the employed interpolation method and with resp...
